If you find yourself or somebody else trying to have a conversation when the microphone on your iPhone isn't working correctly, don't worry. We'll help you troubleshoot and get it working again.
Reasons Why Your iPhone Microphone Isn't Working
In fact, your iPhone microphone may be functional but not 100% working. Sometimes the iPhone microphone is blocked or perhaps the iOS software is outdated. If the iPhone microphone still doesn't work, there might be a hardware problem—or something's in its way. Recognizing any of these instances will help you pinpoint the correct solution.
Fix an iPhone Microphone That Isn't Working
These troubleshooting tips will help you diagnose the problem with your iPhone and get it working again.
Restart the iPhone
Restarting your iPhone can fix many common issues, including microphone problems.
Check for blocked openings
All iPhones have at least three microphones. Check the bottom, front, and back microphone openings to make sure these openings aren't blocked by dirt or debris.
Remove the screen protector or case
Even if your screen protector or case isn't blocking any of the phone's microphone openings, it may still interfere with the phone's microphone. Remove the case and see if this resolves the issue.
Unplug any accessories
If you have any accessories (such as Bluetooth headsets, earbuds, and headphones) plugged into the phone, unplug them and use the microphone again to see if it works.
Try a new headset
If your microphone isn't working, it might be because of a faulty or cheap headset. Try using a fresh headset or pair of earbuds to see if that fixes the problem.
Restart communication apps
If you find that the microphone doesn't work with specific apps such as WhatsApp and Skype, close the app and open it again.
Give apps microphone access
Make sure you allow applications such as WhatsApp and Skype access to the microphone. Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone to view all the apps that have requested access to the microphone. Confirm that the app you're having problems with has microphone access turned on.

Clean the microphone openings
Check to see if there is lint or dust in the microphone openings. If so, use a dry, clean toothbrush to brush out the opening gently.
Test the microphones
To test the microphone, open the Voice Memos app and record a voice memo. Then go to the Camera app and record a video. Play both recordings back to see if you can hear yourself well in both instances. If your voice isn't clear when you play back either recording, continue to the next steps.
Update the iOS
If your iPhone's microphone doesn't seem to be working, you can try updating the iOS software. To check if the iOS is up-to-date, go to Settings > General > Software Update to see if there are any updates available and install them.
Restore the default settings
Unexpected changes to the settings can cause your iPhone microphone to stop working. Resetting your iPhone to its default settings may fix this issue. However, you should back up your iPhone before performing a reset, just in case you want to revert to your old settings.
Contact Apple support
If you have an Apple device with a mechanical or technical problem, contact Apple to make an appointment. If your device is under warranty, the company can troubleshoot the issue or replace it. Alternatively, take your device in for service either at no cost or for a fee, depending on your warranty.
